How to drink soju: a little etiquette

Never pour your own, hold the glass with both hands: the soju rules that matter for your next visit – no exam nerves required.

Neun Flaschen koreanischer Soju in Sorten wie Green Grape, Pflaume, Pfirsich, Apfel, Blaubeere, Grapefruit und Erdbeere stehen aufgereiht mit zwei Jinro-Schnapsgläsern auf einem Holztisch.

Soju (소주) is Korea's most popular spirit – mild, clear and the classic companion to BBQ. There is a charming etiquette around pouring: you never pour for yourself, always for the person across from you. Whoever is being served holds the glass with both hands – a sign of respect.

You toast with “Geonbae!” (건배), the Korean “cheers”. And do not worry: nobody here takes it too strictly – but knowing the rules gives you one more thing to talk about at the table. Besides the classic, soju also comes in fruit varieties such as peach, strawberry or grapefruit.
