Why bulgogi means “fire meat”

Bul means fire, gogi means meat – behind our namesake lie more than a thousand years of Korean grilling.

Bulgogi (불고기) combines “bul” (fire) and “gogi” (meat) – literally fire meat. The dish is one of the oldest classics of Korean cuisine: paper-thin slices of beef marinated in soy sauce, pear, garlic and sesame oil before they meet the open fire.

The pear in the marinade is no coincidence: its enzymes make the meat especially tender and give it that fine, typical sweetness. Here you grill your bulgogi yourself – right at the table grill, the way it has been done in Korea for generations.
